Pawn Promotion in Chess
Pawn promotion is a special rule in chess that occurs when a pawn reaches the farthest rank from its starting position. When this happens, the pawn must be replaced by another piece of the same colour.
Promotion is mandatory and happens immediately upon the pawn’s arrival on the final rank. It is one of the three recognised special moves in chess and is governed by strict rule requirements.

What Is Pawn Promotion?
Pawn promotion is the rule that requires a pawn to be replaced with another piece when it reaches the last rank on the opposite side of the board.
For White, this occurs on the eighth rank.
For Black, this occurs on the first rank.
A pawn may not remain a pawn once it reaches this rank. The move is not complete until promotion has been declared and the new piece has been placed on the board.
When Promotion Occurs
Promotion occurs immediately when:
- A white pawn reaches the eighth rank.
- A black pawn reaches the first rank.
The pawn must have moved legally to that square, either by advancing forward or by capturing diagonally onto the final rank.
Promotion happens as part of the same move that places the pawn on the final rank.

Promotion Is Mandatory
Promotion is not optional.
When a pawn reaches the final rank:
- It must be replaced.
- The player must choose a new piece.
- The pawn cannot remain on the board as a pawn.
The move is not considered complete until the pawn has been replaced with the chosen piece.
Which Pieces a Pawn May Promote To
A pawn may promote to any of the following pieces of the same colour:
- Queen
- Rook
- Bishop
- Knight
A pawn may not promote to:
- A king
- Another pawn
There is no restriction based on previously captured pieces. A player may promote to a piece even if that piece has not been captured earlier in the game.
It is therefore possible to have more than one queen, rook, bishop, or knight of the same colour on the board at the same time.

How Promotion Works
When promotion occurs:
- The pawn is removed from the board.
- The chosen piece is placed on the promotion square.
- The new piece becomes active immediately.
Promotion is completed within the same move that placed the pawn on the final rank. It does not require an additional turn.
The promoted piece functions exactly like any other piece of that type.
Promotion by Capture
Promotion may occur on a capturing move.
If a pawn captures an opposing piece on the final rank, the pawn is removed and replaced with the chosen piece on that same square.
The capture and the promotion happen as part of a single move.

Situations Where Promotion Is Not Allowed
Promotion does not occur:
- Before the pawn reaches the final rank.
- If the pawn is prevented from moving legally to that square.
- If the player attempts to delay choosing a promotion piece.
A pawn cannot remain a pawn once it reaches the final rank.
All standard legality rules, including king safety and turn order, continue to apply.
